Dear Prime Minister Juncker,

I am writing you on behalf of a young and energetic political party, supporting the rule of law.

Yesterday, Mr. Victor Ponta, the current Prime Minister of Romania, has publicly declared that you conveyed to him, at the latest meeting of the European Council, in Brussels, a message of support for the former Prime Minister Adrian Nastase, who is now serving  a two years prison sentence.

This is the public statement of Mr. Ponta:

“Victor, can you pass a message for Adrian Nastase on my behalf? I am willing to publicly state that I know Adrian Nastase, that he was an extraordinary Prime Minister, with whom I cooperated extraordinarily, and that I do not believe that humiliating political characters in an European country is our purpose.”

Prime Minister Juncker, we would like you to publicly confirm this statement.

If this is true, then it is a massive mistake, unbecoming for a Prime Minister. Adrian Nastase has been sentenced by a unanimous decision of our highest court of law. He is currently imprisoned in Rahova prison. Is this the man you wish to send private messages to? Is this legal in Luxembourg?

During your conversation with Mr. Ponta, if there was any, you should have asked him why he has openly defied an order of the Constitutional Court, which stated that the President of Romania, and not the Prime Minister, should participate at the European Council. Did you know that Mr. Ponta did not have a legal mandate to be at that European Council?

Did you also know that Nature, the world’s most cited scientific journal, has recently revealed that Mr. Ponta plagiarized a large part of his 2003 doctoral dissertation? Did you know that an official committee of the Ministry of Education came to the same conclusion? And did you know that he responded by disbanding the entire committee and by sacking respected intellectuals from their positions?

Did you know that in less than two months Mr. Ponta and his government have put in place an authoritarian regime? Institutions are illegally subordinated to the Executive, the media is under pressure, and the Government rules under emergency decrees.

Is this a regime that you support?

We would appreciate any prompt clarifications from your part.

Sincerely Yours,

Mihail Neamţu
